In the digital age, everything is getting smarter. Cars come with built-in navigation, you can do everything from order dinner to pay your bills on a phone, and we can even control the temperature and light in our homes from the palm of our hands. There’s no doubt that we’re living in an increasingly technologically-reliant world, so why wouldn’t that sophistication carry over to something else you use every day like your shower?
There are two main systems — U by Moen and Kohler DTV+ — that will bring your shower online and add unprecedented sophistication to your bathroom. Either the Moen or Kohler smart shower system could be the ideal addition to your space, so let's discover the difference to determine which one fits your life best.
U by Moen Smart Shower
In 2017, Moen released its U by Moen Smart Shower, a system that users control through an app on their phone. As you’re getting ready in the morning, having a cup of coffee or brushing your teeth, the Moen shower system flushes cold water from the pipes, reaching the ideal temperature you’ve set. Once reached, the shower pauses, so no water is wasted, and alerts you via your phone that your shower is ready. However, if your pipes are cold, the water temperature could drop while waiting to be used. It’s not a perfect system, but it is effective and eco-friendly.
The app also allows users to set different temperatures for different family members or different times of the day. For example, a morning shower can be different than a post-workout shower, and Mom’s shower might be be hotter than Dad’s. This smart shower is perfect for people who love consistency in their routine.
Kohler DTV+ Showering System
Following in Moen’s footsteps, Kohler features an entire bathroom series utilizing smart technology powered with Kohler Konnect, utilizing the voice commands of Apple, Amazon and Google assistants. Their DTV (digital thermostatic valve) showers have been around for more than ten years, but now with voice commands, users can control more aspects of their showers like water temperature, pressure, music, lighting and steam. Like the U by Moen, you can save preset showers, and you can begin your morning routine simply by saying, “Alexa, start Kara’s shower.”
If you already own a DTV shower, you can upgrade by purchasing an accessory module so you also have the app and voice assistant technology. In addition to this shower system, Kohler also offers smart vanity mirrors, tubs and toilets, all connected seamlessly through the Kohler Konnect app.
The Cost Of A Smart Shower System
Whether you choose the Moen or Kohler shower system, expect a higher price tag than a traditional shower, no matter how luxurious it is. Both the U by Moen Smart Shower and the Kohler DTV Shower System can run upwards of a few thousand dollars depending on the material, finish and the amount of shower heads you need.
Moen tends to be more expensive, though, because their digitals valves (necessary for a smart shower) cost more than Kohler’s. Because this is new technology, it makes sense that these bathroom elements would come at a high price, but as the tech advances, more affordable options should become available. Whether or not your purchase a smart shower system now depends on how much of a necessity you consider it.
Deciding Between Moen Or Kohler's Smart Shower Solution
Either a Moen or Kohler shower system will provide an exceptional shower experience, but the edge goes to Kohler, who has an entire bathroom line synced to their Kohler Konnect app. As homes become smarter, Kohler is already on its way to creating a truly connected home.
