Pedestal Sink or Vanity: Which is Perfect for Your Powder Room?

Space in a powder room is typically at a premium, so choosing between a pedestal sink or a vanity might seem like a fairly easy decision. Not so fast. While there is plenty to appreciate about a pedestal sink (smaller footprint), there are also points in favor of a vanity (hello, storage). In this post, we'll run through the benefits of each so you can decide which works best for you.

The Case for a Pedestal Sink

Choosing a pedestal sink– especially in a smaller powder room – creates a feeling of airiness that a vanity just can’t deliver. Because a pedestal sink reveals the wall behind it, paint or wall treatments are fully visible, making the bathroom feel bigger.

Pedestal sinks are usually crafted from fire clay, a heavy, clay-like material that is colored through and then fired in a kiln. Because fire clay can be molded into just about any shape, pedestal sinks are available in distinctive styles that match faucet collections. For example, Kohler's Memoirs collection gives you everything you need; faucets, toilets, accessories and, of course, your bathroom sink.

Another positive for pedestal sinks is that if it’s necessary, choosing one that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is much easier than finding an ADA-compliant vanity.

The Advantages of a Vanity

Storage is, by far, the most appealing feature of a vanity. Even pieces with narrow profiles still retain a drawer or cabinet for necessities like tissue paper, soap and extra hand towels.

Vanities also come in a surprising array of styles and materials. You can choose a piece that:

  • Looks like a piece of furniture for a truly timeless appeal
  • Looks like it was built-in for a traditional look
  • Looks like it’s floating on the wall, creating the illusion of more space

Vanities can also accommodate more than one style of sink so you can choose the vanity that fits the sink you've chosen; an undermount (the most common application), a drop-in (easy DIY for a bathroom refresh), or a vessel (for a distinctive modern or old-world aesthetic).

Decision time

Both a pedestal sink and a vanity give you the ability to customize the look of each bathroom in your home. So, really, just like every other choice – the faucet, the flooring, the light fixtures – deciding between a pedestal sink or a vanity comes down to what you really need in your powder room and the overall design scheme you want to come to life.

If storage is near the top of the list, then choose a vanity that’s sized right for the space, but if there are other storage solutions – a medicine cabinet, open shelving above the commode, a corner cabinet or even a small closet – then a pedestal sink might be the better way to go.
